Division 07 - Modified Bituminous Membrane

  1. This information provides guidelines for both APP-modified and SBS-modified bituminous membrane roofing systems. Temporary facilities and controls are covered in other parts of these standards or are available from the WWU project representative.
  2. Modified bituminous membranes should only be used on facilities with existing modified bituminous membrane systems for minor additions and repairs.  This system should not be used for complete re-roofing work.
  3. WWU project representative, Facilities Maintenance (FM), Public Safety Office, and Environmental Health and Safety Office shall approve selection of materials, means, and methods. Unless otherwise approved, design intent requires means and methods that provide minimal disruption to adjacent building activities and operations.
  4. Provide primary products from a single manufacturer. Provide secondary products as recommended by manufacturer of primary products for application with roofing system specified.
  5. The University requires designer to produce a bid package specifying at least two products, not from the same manufacturer, that are pre-determined to be comparable and acceptable.  Require manufacturer’s certification of installer (to ensure warranty); installers may be required to submit certification prior to bid acceptance.
  6. Installer to maintain full-time supervisor/foreman on the project, experienced in installation of roofing systems similar in type and scope to the project.
  7. Western requires emergency phone numbers of contractor’s personnel capable of responding to a roof-related emergency at all hours including non-working hours and non-working days. Answering service phone numbers are not acceptable for this purpose. Submit numbers to WWU project representative.
  8. Warranties:
    • Ten-year No Dollar Limit (N. D. L.) workmanship and material system replacement guarantee from the manufacturer that includes repair of blisters and does not exclude traffic expected on the roof.
    • Three-year workmanship and materials guarantee from the contractor.
    • The contractor, upon notice by the University, shall make emergency, temporary repairs within twelve (12) hours of notification. Contractor shall then complete permanent repairs within fifteen (15) days at no additional cost to the University.
  9. Bituminous membrane systems:
    • Includes base sheet, interplay, surface sheet, flashing ply sheet, flashing capsheet.
    • Roof protection pad (for traffic lanes) per manufacturer recommendations/standards.
    • Reflective coatings: Use only on existing smooth finish system.   All new or replacement roofs are not to have a separate reflective coating.  Prefer the surface sheet have light colored, high reflectance granulated exposed surface.
    • Approved types:
      • SBS-modified bituminous membrane system:
        • Soprema Roofing Systems
        • Siplast Roofing Systems
        • CertainTeed, Flintlastic
  10. Installation method may be any system normally offered by the manufacturer and meeting the uplift and warranty requirements specified and as suited to the specific requirements of the project.
    •   Hot Mop Asphalt
    •   Torch Applied
    •   Cold Applied Adhesive (Alsan Brand)
  11. Comply with NRCA low-sloped roofing guidelines.
  12. Configure substrate so that roof surface slopes to drains.  Provide crickets between drains as required to minimize ponding.
  13. All metal flashings used on the project should have a min. of 3" lap with sealant.
  14. Roof to wall reglet flashings should be 2 piece, preferred is surface mount for secure fastening to wall.
  15. All drains checked before and after each project to assure proper flow and that the drains are clean/clear of all debris.
  16. Provide WISHA approved fall protection systems.  See specific guidelines for these systems in the “DIVISION 11 Equipment” section of the University Campus Standards and Guidelines.
  17. Field verify existing anchoring fall protection systems for soundness before using.
