Division 09 - Acoustical Panel Ceilings

  1. This information provides guidelines for acoustical panel ceilings, acoustical tiles and accessories. The complete design guide is available above.
  2. Washington State encourages green building design and construction. The University seeks to reduce negative effects on natural resources and the environment, while providing a productive and healthy environment for building occupants.
  3. Selection of materials, colors, and sizes must be approved by the WWU project representative. Unless otherwise approved, the design intent would be to select materials that blend with existing or adjacent campus building features.
  4. The University PROHIBITS splined tile systems.
  5. Designer to determine fire ratings required, especially:
    • If space above ceiling is to serve as a plenum; or
    • If acoustical ceilings are designed to function as a fire protective membrane for floor, roof or beam assemblies. Refer to UL “Fire Resistance Directory” or “FM Approval Guide” and ASTM E 119 testing.
  6. Typical acoustical panels:
    • Preferred size: ⅝" x 24" x 48".
    • Omni directional tile.
    • Preferred manufacturer: Armstrong Cortega
  7. Acoustical panels and tiles:
    • Preferred manufacturer:  Armstrong “Minatone” Cortega.
    • Preferred size: Nominal ⅝" x 12" x 12".
  8. Adhesive:  As recommended by tile manufacturer.
  9. Hangers and bracing:
    • Support hangers only from building structural members (beams and slabs).
    • DO NOT SUPPORT mechanical or electrical equipment by ceiling suspension system.
    • Hanger wire not less than 12 gauge.
    • No unbraced areas over 12'-0" in any direction.
    • Comply with all seismic bracing requirements. 
  10. Extra stock:
    • Designer/PM: Verify with Western Renovation Services that they can store extra stock.
    • Small projects:  Deliver leftover contents of last opened box to Western.
    • Large projects:  Provide maintenance stock (2% of amount installed).
    • Package with protective covering for storage and identify with appropriate labels (mfr’s label, Western job number).
