Division 09 - Carpet & Carpet Tile

  1. This information provides guidelines for carpet, carpet tiles, accessories, and carpet recycling.
  2. WWU project representative, Facilities Maintenance (FM) and Environmental Health and Safety Office shall approve selection of materials, colors and sizes, means, and methods. The design intent is to select materials that blend with existing or adjacent campus building features.
  3. When working on or adjacent to occupied buildings, require means and methods that protect occupants from exposure to noises, dust, traffic, odor, and other hazards.
  4. Environmental Health and Safety and project representative shall review MSDS for leveling compounds, adhesive system, and carpet products. Meet Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) criteria for “Green Label” requirements (low VOC) ASTM D 5116.
  5. Provide adequate fresh air during installation process.
  6. Unroll and air out (off gas) carpet in a warehouse 72 hours prior to installation. (Tests indicate that carpet emissions will dissipate within 48 to 72 hours with proper ventilation.)
  7. Flame/smoke resistance standards:  Class 1 only.
  8. Static resistance: Do not exceed 3.5 kV (kilovolt) resistance for 20% R. H (relative humidity) at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  9. Static decay rate: Use Federal Test Method 4046 (101C) or NFPA 45-a for product evaluations.
  10. Warranties:
    • Provide ten (10) year written guarantee beginning from date of “Substantial Completion” against faulty material and/or workmanship.
    • Provide ten (10) year written guarantee beginning from date of “Substantial Completion” that carpet product will not lose more than 10% of its original fiber content, by weight, due to abrasive wear.
    • Provide lifetime written guarantee against edge ravel and delamination.
    • Manufacturer guarantee to recycle the new carpet when removed.
  11. Carpet and carpet tile

    • Colorfastness (crocking): 4 or better (wet & dry).
    • Colorfastness (water): 4 or better
  12. Leveling compound:
    • Latex type, recommended by manufacturer for the type of application.  Low volatile compounds.
  13. Adhesive:
    • Use low volatile organic compound (VOC) floor covering adhesive. Meet emissions criteria allowed for CRI “Green Label.”
    • Use carpet manufacturer’s approved adhesive only.
