Division 31 - Earthwork

  1. This information is intended to provide guidelines for earthwork, including subterranean product information. Related products and temporary facilities and controls are covered in other parts of these standards or are available from the WWU project representative. 
  2. WWU project representative, Facilities Maintenance (FM), Public Safety Office, and Environmental Health and Safety Office shall approve selection of materials, means, and methods. Unless otherwise approved, design intent requires means and methods that provide minimal disruption to adjacent building activities and operations. WWU prohibits blasting as means for performing earthwork.
  3. When working adjacent to occupied buildings, require means and methods that protect occupants from exposure to noise, dust, traffic, and other hazards.
  4. Require a single-source responsibility supplier to ensure uniformity in construction and appearance. 
  5. Require tests and inspections performed by special consultants approved by WWU project representative. 
  6. Clearly delineate and define limits of excavation and/or backfill. 
  7. Crushed surfacing: 
    1. Parking areas: surface with ⅝" minus crushed limestone.
    2. Pedestrian trails: surface with ⅝" minus crushed limestone.    
  8. Topsoil: Ensure clean material free of construction debris, woody debris over 6" in length, and Himalayan blackberry brambles, tubers, noxious weed parts, and seeds.
